Extended Biography

Margarethe Engelmann was born in 1803 to Friedrich Engelmann and his wife Elisabeth Kipp. In 1827 she married Friedrich Hilgard (who was her first cousin), a widower with five sons. In 1833, her father and several of her siblings emigrated from Germany to the United States. The letters she received from her siblings Theodor, Charlotte, and Sophie constitute the Engelmann Family Letters. She died in 1882.
