English Text
Crescent City, August
My dear brother!
I received a letter today from our dear parents and brothers and sisters. I am overwhelmed with joy that you will soon be with me! I am upset, however, that you have not been a little more helpful in this situation. I do not know if you ever received the one hundred dollars I sent to Germany for you. You did not even let me know when you arrived in New York. I expect Lemann had something to do with that.
Now, pay attention to what I tell you. Ask Lemann to get you a through ticket on the Vanderbilt Line, Nicaragua. They sail the best route. Let Lemann read this letter, since he will understand it better. Do not take much baggage, because it costs too much. Try to meet a decent person on the trip who can help you with the language. When you arrive in San Francisco, go to a man named David Bauernfreund. He lives on Montgomery Street, No. 94. He will greet you with open arms when you mention my name. He is a good friend of mine and will be very helpful to you. I presently live in a town about 400 miles from San Francisco. I have established a rather nice business and hope, with God's help, to become very successful.
I will probably be in San Francisco to meet you myself. Write me immediately after you receive this letter. Send your letter through the Adams & Company Express or Wells Fargo. Tell me when you are leaving and which route you are taking.
My address is:
E.D. Cohen
c/o David Bauernfreund
Montgomery Street, No. 94
San Francisco
Take care of yourself, dear brother and stay away from
danger.
Your brother,
Seligmann Heilner
Via Express your letter goes straight through.
When you arrive in San Francisco, go to the Post Office and ask for the letter I will have for you there.
