Theuerste Mutter!
Es ist Sonntag, - meine Frau ist mit ihren Töchtern Rosa u Clara u mit dem jungen Ehepaare in Bellville
ausgefahren, um unserm wackern Vetter Ledergerber und seiner freundlichen Frau einen Besuch zu machen.
Molly u ich sind zu Hause geblieben u leben der Hoffnung, daß die gewöhnlichen Sonntagsvisiten
aus Bellville, die uns diesen Tag der Ruhe u Erholung bis weilen etwas geräuschvoll u, langweilig machen,
heute ausbleiben werden. Ich will daher die angenehme u feierliche Stille, die uns umgiebt, benutzen, um zur
Feder zu greifen und mich mit meinem lieben Mütterchen zu unterhalten. Daß u warum ich keinen Juny-Brief
schrieb, werden Sie von Saarlouis aus erfahren haben, wenigstens bat ich Schwester Marie in einem Briefe, den ich vor
etwa 4 Wochen an sie u Leute schrieb, Ihnen darüber einige Worte zu sagen, durch Maries Brief, welcher
den meinigen veranlaßte, sind wir denn auch wenigstens bis Mitte Aprils von dem Stande der Dinge im Kreise
unserer lieben Angehörigen in Deutschland ziemlich unterrichtet, und da die Nachrichten im Allgemeinen
gut waren, so erreichten sie uns zum großen Vergnügen, dürfte ich doch auch wiedereinmal
auf einige Zeilen von dem theuern Onkel in Arnsberg hoffen!
Um es nicht wieder zu vergesen, will ich gleich mit einem Auftrag an Bruder Fritz den Anfang machen -oder vielmehr
mit der Zurücknahme eines Auftrags. Ich hatte ihn nämlich gebeten, mir durch H. Michel, wenn dieser wirklich im
kommenden Herbste nach Am. abreisen sollte, wo möglich etwa 1000 Stück [?]Reben[/?] zu schicken. Diese Bitte nun widerufe ich
aus einem dreifachen Grunde: erstlich, weil ich fürchte, daß es H M. zu viele Mühe verursachen würde; zweitenz ,weil ich durch den
Umstand, daß mir zu Anfang May an den wenigen Weinstöcken, die ich besitze alle jungen Sprossen erfroren sind, in puncto des
Weinbaues wieder sehr stutzig geworden bin u erst noch weitere Erfahrungen abwarten will, ehe ich die Mühe u Kosten der Anlegung
eines größern Weinbergs aufs Spielsetze, denn wenn die scharfen Nachtfröste in Frühling, namentlich bis zum Monat May
eine gewöhnliche Erscheinung sind, wie ich leider besorgen auß, so ist an einem Weinbau von Bedeutung nicht zu denken, so köstlich u früh
auch die Trauben, einer so kräftigen u anhaltenden Sommerwärme, hier reifen müßen, wenn sie die Frühlingsgefahren überstanden
haben. Drittens endlich bin ich vor einigen Monaten durch einen glücklicher Zufall in den Besitz einer hübschen Anzahl junger Weinstöcke
aus dem Rheingau gekommen. Es langten nämlich zwei Gebrüder Niedecken, Söhne des alten Bachasacher Hausfreundes, in
St. Louis an. Der eine derselben - Hermann - kam sogleich zu uns, überbrachte mir einen Brief von Freund Fritz Weiss — der
jetzt Präsident des neuen Bezirksgerichts in Alzey ist — (was Sie vielleicht von mir zuerst erfahren, wenn Ihnen W. nicht auch, wie
mir, seine lithographirte Karte mit seinem neuen Titel geschickt hat) — u brachte mehrere Wochen bei uns zu. Er hatte 80- 90
Stück rheinische Reben von allen Sorten mitgenommen, die in sehr gutem Zustande ankamen u die wir sogleich in meinem Garten, sorgfältig
pflanzten, da nun über 3/4 derselben schön u lußtig gewachsen sind, und da H.N. (der die hiesige Landwirthschaft etwas weniger leicht
u vergnüglich findet als er sich in Europa träumte u daher einen andern Weg einschlagen will), mir sämmtliche Reben überlaßen hat,
so bin ich mehr als hinlänglich damit versehen, um meine Experimente zu machen u weitere Stöcke nachzuziehen, wenn die Versuche
gelingen.— Da ich gerade am Kapitel der Landwirthschaft bin, so will ich Ihnen doch auch ein wenig von der unsrigen erzählen,
damit Sie in den Fortschriften derselben an fait bleiben. Wir melken jetzt 5 Kühe, lauter schöne, glatte u sanftmüthige
Thiere; und eine 6ten, die beste von Allen, wird nächstens kalben. Daß wir also Milch Rahm, Sauremilch, Butter
u Käse im Überfluß haben, können Sie sich denken. Das Melkgeschäft besorgen die drei Knaben. Wilhelm
als Melker en Chef, und die beiden andern als seine Gehülfen. Im Frühling u Sommer, wo das Rindvieh reichlich
Weide im Freien findet, hat man wirklich nicht die geringste Mühe damit. Die Kühe kommen sehr regelmäßig

jeden Morgen u jeden Abend aus Wald u Gebüsch an das Hofthor u begehren Einlaß, um gemolken zu
werden, u ihre Kälber, die in unsern großen mit Gras bewachsenen Hofe Tag u Nacht herum spazieren,
ihren Antheil trinken zu lassen. So viele Milch als bei der Stallfütterung gibt freilich eine Kuh
nicht, die sich den ganzen Tag über Bewegung im Freyen macht, aber deso besser ist die Qualität.
Unsere 5 Kühe geben im Durchschnitt täglich etwa 50 Schoppen, außer dem was die Kälber trinken. Im
Winter hat man mehr Mühe u Sorge mit dem Vieh, da man es, wenn es nicht elend werden u mitunter Hungers
sterben soll, während der kältesten Zeit u besonders wenn Schnee liegt, regelmäßig füttern muß: Wir haben
daher auch in diesem Jahre unser Hauptaugenmerk auf die Anschaffung eines guten Vorraths Winterfutter
gerichtet, namentlich durch Anlegung einer großen Wiese von circa 4 acres einhalb der Unzäunung, so daß
wir hoffen, alle unsere Milchkühe auch den Winter hindurch beibehalten u gehörig füttern zu können. Außer
diesen Kühen haben wir 8 Kälber, wovon 4 schon anderthalbjährig u 4 von diesem Jahre. Die Mutterkälber,
5 an der Zahl wollen wir aufziehen, die jungen Ochsen sollen verkauft oder geschlachtet werden. So dann
haben wir zwei schöne Pferde, einen Rothschimmel u einen Grauschimmel ,nebst einem Füllen. Unsere Schweinezucht
ist noch sehr gering, 12 Stück in Allem, Groß u Klein der Umstand, daß das Vieh aller Art im Winter
gefütterte u sonst besorgt u gepflegt werden muß, macht einen sehr zahlreichen Viehstand zu einer
sehr beschwerlichen Sache, weshalb wir auch gesonnen sind, den unsrigen nicht sehr anwachsen zu lassen.
Mit dem <u>Federvieh</u> hatten wir bisher wenig Glück, so sehr auch die Lage, Umgebung u Einrichtung unseres
Gutes dazu geeignetzu sein scheint. Das arme Geflügel hat zu viele gefährliche Feinde, als da sind: der Fuchs,
der Mück (eine Art Marder), große Ratten, Eulen, das Opossum, der Racoon oder Waschbär und endlich die
Hühnerschlange, der Habicht etc. gar nicht zu gedenken, die oft zu zwein oder drei in den Lüften über unserm
Hofe kreisen, u ein erschreckliches Alarmgeschrei unter dem Hühnervolke veranlassen. Von mehr als 100 jungen
Hühnchen, die unsern Gluckhennen im Lauf dieses Jahres ausbrüteten, sind kaum noch 20-30 übrig. Wir hatten einen
Truthahn mit 4 Hennen. Letztern wurden sämmtlich einem Fuchs zur Beute, der sie nacheinander von den Nestern wo sie brüteten
wegholte, und sammt den Eyern aufspeiste. Der verwitwete Hahn, der ohnehin in tiefe Traurigkeit versunken wahr,
mußte dann sein Leben lassen, um an meinem letzten Geburtstage als Hauptbraten zu figuriren. Auch sterben sehr viele
junge Hühner, besonders junge Truthühner eines natürlichen Todes, in Folge einer plötzlich eintretenden naßkalten Witterung.
Solcherlei kleine Unfälle machen mancherlei etwas Verdruß u bilden eine Schattenseite der Idylle, aber man tröstet sich
bald wieder darüber u läßt den Dingen, die man nicht ändern kann, gelassen ihren Lauf.— Mit meiner diesjährigen Erndte
kann ich sehr zufrieden sein, wo bei freilich Freund Adam mehr Verdienst hat, als ich selbst. Mein Weizen — etwa
5 acres, war anerkannt der schönste in der ganzen Gegend und füllt jetzt die eine Hälfte meiner neu erbauten
Scheuer. Auch meine Hafer- u Kartoffeläcker suchen ihres Gleichen, aber mein Maisfeld steht schlecht, weil Adam
die rechte Art der Kultur dieser höchst werthvollen u wichtigen Produkts noch nicht kannte u daher in diesem Punkt mehrere
Fehler machte. Es fällt ihm überhaupt sehr schwer, sich irgendetwas Amerikanisches anzueignen. Er ist, wie Sie wissen, eine Art
von Pedant, der nicht leicht fremde Ideen aufnimmt u alles mit großer Umständlichkeit betreibt. Ist nun die Zeit
hinreichend, so wird Alles, was er macht, sehr gut, da aber hier zu Lande alle Vegetation - also auch die des Unkrauts
viel rascher vorwärts geht als Deutschland, so verrechnet er sich meist in Betreff der Zeit. Sonst ist er
fortwährend brav, obschon der Übermuth, der hier im Lande der Gleichheit unfehlbar jede gemeinere deutsche Natur
ansteckt, auch ihn nicht ganz unberührt gelassen hat. Übrigens ist er ganz u gar anti-amerikanisch, so
sehr ihm auch der fruchtbare milde Boden gefällt. Er schilt über Alles was die Amerikaner ihm,macht sich, so viel möglich,
lauter Werkzeuge nach deutscher Art und hat auch noch nicht ein einziges englisches Wort gelernt, nicht einmal yes u no,

was doch jeder Deutsche, der drei Tage lang in Am. ist, sich sogleich angewöhnt. Ihren Gruß an ihn, liebste Mutter,
habe ich aus gerichtet, u er läßt ihr herzlich erwidern, besonders auch an das Robertel.
Eben fällt mir ein, liebste Mutter, daß ich Ihnen noch gar nichts von meiner nun angelegten Stadt <u>West-Belleville</u>
erzählt habe. Ja, Scherz bei Seite, ich habe eine Stadt gegründet, so gut wie Romulus, u es hängt nur von dem Fatum
ab, ob es sie zur Weltherrscherin machen will. Bald nach dem Ankaufe meines Gutes wurde mir klar, daß ein
Theil meines Landes, zu beiden Seiten der Landstraße, welche von Belleville nach St Louis führt, sich sehr gut
zu Bauplätzen eignen u eine Art Vorstadt von Belleville werden können, namentlich von dem Punkt an, wo Edward u Wolf
ihre Brennerei erbaut haben u welche nur etwa 100 Schritte von einer großen und stattlichen, gleichfalls neuerbauten
Dampfmühle liegt. Wirklich meldeten sich bald mehrere Leute, welche etwas Land zur Erbauung von Wohnungen
von mir zu haben wünschten, u so fand ich mich dem ganz natürlich veranlaßt, mit der regelmäßigen Auslegung eines
Städtchens nicht länger zu zögern. Ich ließ also durch den Bezirks-Feld-Messer 54 Bauplätze von 50 Fuß Front
u 50 Fuß Tiefe mit einer Hauptstraße u 4 Querstraßen ausmessen, gab dem Kindlein den obigen Namen, um
anzudeuten, daß eigentlich von einem Anhang zur Stadt B. die Rede sei, ließ eine Ankündigung in den Zeitungen
einrücken u in den Kaufladen anheften u frisirte den Preis eines Bauplatzes (Lot) auf 50 Dollars, d. h. auf einen
Preis, der dem Publikum, in Vergleichung mit den hohen Preisen der Bauplätze in Belleville selbst, sich billig vorkommen
u sonach Leute von mäßigen Mitteln anziehe mußte. Und dieser Calkul war ganz richtig, den ich habe bereits
die Hälfte aller Bauplätze um den erwähnten Preis verkauft, während mich selbst ein solcher Bauplatz kaum 3 D. kostet.
So läßt sich in Am. spekuliren, wenn man einigermaßen Glück hat u die günstigen Umstände benutzt. Mehrere unter den
Käufern haben bereits angefangen zu bauen, u in einigen Jahren wird das Städtchen, welches jetzt freilich erst auf dem
Papiere steht, sich wirklich erheben. Neulich verkaufte ich einen Bauplatz an einen Amerikaner, der mit Frau u Kindern so
eben aus Kentucky angelangt war. Er brauchte nur 10 Minuten, um sich ein Lot zu wählen, u kaum waren wir Handels einig,
so nahm er seine Axt von der Schulter u fing an, die darauf stehenden Bäume niederzuhauen. Drei Wochen später
bewohnte er schon mit seiner Familie das neue Blockhaus. So baut der Amerikaner. Er braucht kaum so viel Zeit als die
Schwalbe oder der Sperling, um sein Nest fertig zu machen. Sonst sind es meist Deutsche, recht ordentliche und
manierliche Leute,– die sich in West Belleville ansiedeln wollen u ich glaube, daß es recht eigentlich ein deutsches
Städtchen werden wird. Selbst Freund Adam hat sich einige Lots gekauft u scheint sich einst da eine Heimath gründen
zu wollen. Er läßte sogar schon jetzt dann u wann [insertion:]mit Schmunzeln[/insertion] ein Wort offen von heirathen fallen. "Sich aber so eine kuriose
Sache damit" — sagte er neulich — mer weiß eben nicht wie mers trifft! — Ebenso hat Espenschied von Marnheim,
Edwards Pächter, der sich sehr gut steht, einige Lots gekauft u viel, unter Anderm den Schreiner Vollmann von Marnheim,
dessen Sie sich erinern werden u der sehr geschikt sein soll, engagiren nach Am. zu kommen, um sich hier zu
etabliren, u. s. w. Ich selbst wohne etwa 300 Schritte von West-Belleville.
Der Gesundheitszustand in unserm Hause ist noch immer erwünscht, u eben so ist im Kreise unserer hiesigen
Bekannten u Verwandten bis jetzt kein ernstlicher Krankheitsfall vorgekommen, obschon Manche wegen des
sehr nassen Frühlings u der darauf eingetreten anhaltenden Hitze ein Krankheitsjahr d. h. Fieber und
Ruhr — die beiden Hauptformen der klimatischen Krankheiten dieses Landes prophezeyten. Die Ruhr herrscht
auch wirklich in St Louis, besonders unter den Kindern, u es hält sich seit etwa 8 Tagen eine Bekannte aus
St. Louis (Frau Fleischbein) mit ihren Kindern bei uns auf, um diesem Übel zu entgehen. Es ist überhaupt
eine ausgemachte Sache, die auch täglich mehr anerkannt wird, daß St. Louis u die Umgegend weit
weniger gesund ist, als unsere Belleviller Hochebene, so wie auch die Musqeito-Plage während des
Sommers unerträglich sein soll, während diese lästigen Gäste bei uns nur selten u in geringer Zahl erscheinend.

Besondere Neuigkeiten habe ich nicht zu melden. Durch die Erndtegeschäfte ist der gewöhnliche Lauf der
gegenseitigen Besuche unter den deutschen hiesiger Gegend auf eine Zeitlang unterbrochen;– doch
weiß ich, daß Alle, die uns näher interessieren, wohl sind. Fritz Hilgard u Theodor Krafft werden nächster
Tage in Handelsangelegenheiten eine Reise nach dem Osten, d.h. nach New-York, Philadelphia, Baltimore
antreten u da sie in der schönen Jahreszeit u überdies in angenehmer u interessanter Gesellschaft
reisen, so versprechen sie sich viel Vergnügen. Überhaupt sind hier im Westen, namentlich in St. Louis,
trotz der ungeheuern zu Fütterung des Handels [?]velt[/?], nicht ein einziges Hau gebrochen, was
gewiß sehr für die Verhältnisse des Westens spricht.
Und somit schließ ich für diesmal, theuerste Mutter. Halten Sie sich heiter u gesund u grüßen
Sie alle unsern lieben Angehörigen, auch die gute Frau Sinchen nicht zu vergeßen, der ich zu sagen hätte,
daß ihr Theoder fortwährend wohl u vergnügt ist, sich in allen Stücken gut benimmt, und fast
täglich besucht und - bei den Frauenzimmern in Belleville Glück macht. Nochmals, Adieu
