Theuerste Mutter! Wenn diese Zeilen ihren Bestimmungsort erreichen, wird unser lieber Fritz H. ohne Zweifel schon längst bei Ihnen eingetroffen sein, und Ihnen also auch, bis zum Tag seiner Abreise, mündlichen Bericht über unser Befinden gegeben haben. Ich sage bis zum Tag seiner Abreise, den er wird Ihnen erzählt haben, daß er, zu unserm großen Vergnügen, den letzten Abend seines hierseins bei uns zubrachte, indem er der Trauung meiner Rosa mit Ed. Tittmann beiwohnte — am 15. April. Sie sehen, liebste Mutter, aus dem oben ausgestrichenen Datum dieses Briefes, daß der selbe eigentlich weit früher geschrieben werden sollte, als er nun wirklich zu Stande kommt. Ich wurde, als ich ihn eben anfangen wollte, durch Besuche und Geschäfte unterbrochen, und dann kam so vielerlei Abhaltung hinterdrein, daß ich lange nicht mehr die rechte Zeit und Stimmung zum Schreiben finden konnte. Auch dachte ich, Fritzens mündlicher Bericht könne gar wohl einen Brief von mir ersetzen, da ich Ihnen doch in der Regel außer dem, was unser Befinden betrifft, wenig Wesentliches oder Interessantes mittheilen kann. Ganz recht war dies freilich nicht, aber ich weiß doch, daß Sie mir es unter den erwähnten Umständen gern verzeihen werden. In den letzten 3 oder 4 Wochen kam noch ein anderer Grund dazu, von dem ich etwas mehr sagen muß, den er bezieht sich auf einen Gegenstand der für mich von großem Interesse ist, daß er aufrichtig gesprochen, jetzt mein liebstes Steckenpferd bildet, u der vielleicht auch Ihnen nicht uninteressant sein wird. Ich wollte Ihnen nämlich das Resultat meiner Versuche über den Bau des Weinstocks hier zu Lande mittheilen, die in diesem Jahre, nachdem ich ein ganz besonderes Verfahren eingeschlagen, über alle Erwartungen gut auszufallen versprechen, oder viel mehr bereits ausgefallen sind, denn da die Trauben bereits vollkommen ausgebildet sind u ihrer Reise nahen u da hier an Sonnenwärme kein Mängel ist, so läßt sich Ihr weiteres Gedeihen nicht mehr bezweifeln. Vorausschicken muß ich, daß schon sehr viele Deutsche den Bau des Weinstocks hier versuchten, daß sie aber Alle scheiterten, theils weil sie dabei dem heimischen Schlendrian zu blindlings folgten, ohne die Verschiedenheit des Klimas gehörig zu beachten, namentlich den wichtigen Umstand, daß hier die Winterkälte, wenn auch nur Stoßweise in auf kurzer Dauer viel grimmiger zu sein pflegt, als in den weinbauenden Gegenden Deutschlands, u daß dagegen im Sommer der Weinstock in Deutschland oft zu wenig, hier aber zu viel Wärme hat. Viele auch oder vielmehr Alle, hatten zu wenig Zeit, um genau genug zu beobachten, u ihre Versuche lange genug fortzusetzen. Glücklicherweise erlaubten meine Verhältnisse mir Beides, u so kann ich zuletzt, nachdem ich früher das Mißgeschick der Anderen getheilt hatte, auf eine Methode, deren Erfolg ist, daß ich jetzt in meinem Garten einige Dutzend Weinstöcke zeigen kann, die so voll großer, kräftiger u gesunder Trauben hängen, daß Jedermann darüber in Erstaunen geräth u daß mir vor Vergnügen des Herz hüpft, wenn ich davorstehe. Ich bekomme dieses Jahr folgende Sorten, 1.) eine spanische Traube, groß dunkelblau, mit einem eigenthümlichen Ananas Geschmack, 2.) eine rothbraune, deren Herkunft ich nicht weiß, -(ich fand nämlich einen Stock davon schon in meinem Garten vor) sie ist groß u. sehr delikat. 3.) Rieslinge 4) Gutedel 5.) Oestreicher 6.) Veltliner 7.) Orleans oder [?] Hartenget. [/?] (8.) mehrere Sorten rote rheinische Trauben, namentlich die von Assmannshausen die ich durch den jungen Niedecken

erhielt. Auch habe ich mehrere Stöcke Muskateller u. Traminer, die aber dieses Jahr nicht tragen. Sie können sich leicht vorstellen, liebste Mutter, wie viele Freude mir dieses unerwartete Gelingen meiner Versuche macht, besonders wenn ich bedenke, wie folgenreich es für das ganze Land u vielleicht auch für meine eigenen Finanzen sein kann. Ich muß jedoch der Wahrheit zur Steuer hinzufügen, daß das Gedeihen der rheinischen Traubensorten wenige vollständig u üppig der Fall zu sein scheint, als der beiden Sorten unter N. 1 u 2. Wenigstens ist es in diesem Jahr der Fall. Vielleicht rührt es aber auch blos daher, daß meine rheinischen Weinstöcke durch die frühere ungeeignete Behandlung zu viel gelitten hatten, als daß sie in diesem Jahre in voller Kraft hätten tragen können. Dagegen sind die Weinstöcke N. 1 u 2 so reich u. üppig, daß oft an dem Triebe eines einzigen Auges vier ja fünf Trauben hängen, während in Deutschland drei Trauben an einem Auge schon ein Phänomen sind. Ja noch mehr. Ich habe die gegründetste Aussicht, jährlich eine doppelte Traubenernte zu machen, die erste zu Ende Angust, die zweite zu Anfang Oktober, versteht sich, an den namentlichen Stöcken. Müsste ich nicht fürchten, Ihnen Langeweile zu machen, so würde ich Ihnen dies Räthsel erklären, und überhaupt meine Methode ein wenig näher beschreiben. Aber dann müßte ich in das Detail des Schnittes u der Behandlungsart des Weinstockes eingehen, u ich denke, daß weder sie, liebste Mutter, noch die übrigen Leser dieses Briefes daran große Unterhaltung finden würden. Übrigens versteht sich von selbst, daß ich nun unverzüglich meine Traubenanlagen bedeutend vergrößern werde. Ich habe für diesen Fall bereits früher Schnittlinge eingelegt, u ich besitze auf meinem Gut ein Terrain für einen Weinberg, das man sich nicht schöner träumen könnte.— Da hätte ich nun mein Steckenpferd tüchtig herumgetümmelt, aber sagen Sie selbst ob es nicht in Wahrheit ein stattliches Roß ist? Indem ich mich besinne, welche Familiennachrichten ich Ihnen dies mal zu geben habe, fällt mir wieder nichts ein, als die alte Phrase: es ist Alles wohl u heiter. Wie glücklich wäre ich, wenn ich nicht wieder in Modifikation hinzufügen mußte, daß der Gesundheitszustand meiner guten Frau, in Folge alter mitgebrachter Übel, fortwährend schwankend ist, obwohl er nicht gerade unmittelbare Besorgnisse erregt. Theodor H. der uns mit Frau und Kindern am vergangenen Sonntag besuchte, ist mit den Seinigen sehr wohl. Seine beiden Töchterchen sind wahre Engel, u seine zwei Knaben kernhafte Burschen. Vergangene Woche- an meinem 51. Geburtstage 7 July- besuchten uns auch Onkel u Tante Engelmann. Beide sind sehr wohl, u ich glaube namentlich, daß der Onkel in Deutschland nie besser aussah als jezt. Er war höchst erfreut über meine Trauben u will meine Methode nachahmen. Ich denke, bald werden wir zu Bacharach in Ills (so nennt der Onkel seine jetzige Wohnung) Trauben essen u Wein trinken wie einst zu Bacharach am Rhein. Ich trage mich schon lange mit dem Vorsitze einmal ausführlich an den lieben Onkel in Arnsberg zu schreiben, von dem ich gar zu wenig höre- Hoffentlich kommt es bald zur Ausführung. Einstweilen dorthin meine innigsten Grüße, wenn Sie Gelegenheit dazu haben. Auch alle andern die uns lieb haben, sind herzlich von uns gegrüßt.
